Paddling out of
Sechelt, BC
Our Teams
Mackenzie Mussels
Mackenzie Mussels - The team is made up of men and women of all ages who enjoy
paddling hard at competitions and having great practices here on the inlet. The team has
been together for five years. Though we have many experienced paddlers on the team,
we also welcome newcomers to the sport. Paddlers on the Mackenzie Mussels commit to
attending at least two regattas (competitions) per season. These regattas take place in
various communities in the province and over 1 -2 days. The costs for the regattas are
partly covered by team fund raising and the rest is funded by the individual paddler. It is
this team's philosophy that dragon boating should be an inclusive experience with
everyone committing to working hard through out the season on their individual paddle
stroke and blending with the team. During practices we have recreational portions where
the mood is relaxed and talkative and serious training sessions where you will push your
own limits. Most of all, the team has a lot of fun, enjoys the beautiful paddling setting all
the while improving on personal fitness and meeting our competitive goals.
Paddlers are expected to attend practice twice a week (Mondays 6:00- 8:00pm and
Thursdays 6:00-8:00),
from April through September.
Porpoise Paddlers
Porpoise Paddlers
Imagine being out on the waters of the Inlet in the summer morning calm, with seals,
gulls and eagles making an appearance? That’s what the Porpoise Paddlers do every
Thursday morning, and the boat is full of nature and fitness enthusiasts.
Our coach helps us gain skills and endurance, without the requirement of competing in
regattas (although our other teams love to have Porpoise Paddlers join them for
competitions).
In the summer we plan to take several excursions along the shores of the Inlet, bringing
along a picnic lunch and our bathing suits. In the summer, too, we’ve added an optional
evening practice Tuesday evening at 7 pm, beginning June 1st. Here we are hoping to
attract additional folks who cannot make the morning practice, or the 5 pm practice
of the competitive teams
Sea Gals
Sea Gals - A women's regatta team formed in the spring of 2010. Our goals are fun,
fitness, camaraderie and competing in regattas during the paddling season. Tuesday
after practice we plan a dinner out for as many paddlers as can make. It is an
opportunity to get to know each other on a social level. Although we practice with
great discipline we take time during our practice to enjoy the view, have a candy break,
chat and laugh. Many of our paddlers have years of experience however we welcome
new paddlers to join our team. At the beginning of each season we meet and decide
which regattas we would like to attend under the name Sea Gals. These regattas require
a 1 to 2 day commitment and are usually close enough to the Coast that we can carpool.
Although some of the expenses are covered through fund-raising, paddlers individually
have team fees and other expenses. Paddlers are expected to attend practices twice a
week as every practice is important to race preparations. Practice days are Tuesday
and Thursday 5:15 to 7:15pm.
Sunshine Dragons Abreast
Sunshine Dragons Abreast - A team of women who have survived and/or are living with
breast cancer. Twice a week, from the end of March through September we venture out
on Porpoise Bay where, surrounded by spectacular scenery, we paddle in our Dragon Boat.
For the past several years we have participated in the Women's Regatta in False Creek,
and Nanaimo's Dragon Boat Festival, as well as friendly local competitions. Our goals are
to promote fitness for those affected by breast cancer; to promote breast cancer
awareness in the community; and to have outrageous pink fun. We aim to excel at all of
these.
Sunshine Dragons Abreast paddles on Monday 5:00 - 7:00 pm and Wednesday 5:30 to
7:30 pm
