The Early Wake, A Fine Canadian Tradition
Part 1:
Canadians are often thought of as shy and polite. We are a considerate people
and enjoy a good sense of the sublime.
One of our traditions, developed so that we could share our joy at having made past our 80th birthdays,
is to have an Early Wake Party.
A little ol’ Salmon Arm, British Columbia lady turned 84 and decided to have an Early Wake Party.
She dressed as the "Dearly Departed." A homemade coffin sat in the corner, complete with
dummy wearing a computer retouched photo of her face.
Fiddles drums, Irish music, food, pseudo Preacher, Ghoul with shovel, top hat and tails and all
her friends (with a fair amount of Beer and Shine), and DANCING CLOGS were there!
The way Bridgett saw it, "Why the hell should I miss a good Party?" If you were in Salmon Arm
that night, "Bridgett’s Wake" was the place to be. All present intended to send her off to glory in
fine Canadian style!
Part 2:Addendum to The Early Wake Party.

Bridgett died on her 101st birthday. We loaded her up and took her to the grave yard in a
four horse glass hearse. The Salmon Arm graveyard is up the hill and out of town. As the team
struggled up the steep slope and neared the crest, the back loading door of the hearse sprung open
and out shot Bridgett, coffin and all. The coffin tumbled over and over and over down the hill, until
it crossed the main street and smashed through the drug store's glass door.
Across the shop it tumbled and crashed up against the prescription counter, where the coffin lid sprung
off. The Druggist looked up and Bridgett said "ha' you got anything to stop me coffin?"
Salmon Arm is going to miss Bridgett. She was a game ol' gal!
