Good Evening and Welcome to Hockey Night in Canada…

My Dad once said to me, if you ever wanted to invade Canada, do it on a Saturday night during hockey season. I always thought that this was his idea of a joke but in all honesty he's right. If you wanted to conquer our fair country, do it during Hockey Night in Canada when everyone is indoors glued to their sets and you're assured of a quick victory. For you see, hockey for us is more than just a sport, it's a way of life.

Two of my favourite Canadian writers, Will and Ian Ferguson, said this about Canadians and hockey. "Hockey matters to Canadians. Canadians care deeply. Anaheim vs. Nashville. San Jose vs. Phoenix. Who will win? Who will lose? Who would possibly care one way or another? Canadians, that's who."

'To sea' or not 'to sea': that is the question

Political leaders in the North want Canada's official motto changed to reflect the fact that the country has more than two coastlines.

Canada's current motto is "From sea to sea," referring to how its land mass touches both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

  • Inspires us with Bi-cultural Parenting- Part One

When individuals with dissimilar cultural backgrounds unite, they represent a group of parents whose concerns are unique but who share a common denominator in their respective bi-cultural homes: The special challenges encountered in accepting change. The need to alter expectations, traditions, culinary customs, languages, and perhaps religion (to name a few) may be just some of the adjustments necessary in the fascinating circumstances found in bi-cultural homes. 'Bi-cultural' parenting is a term that can be used to describe the fusing of two differing sets of customs in a home environment where children are being raised. .... see Full Story

Micheline's Put-in

Finding the co-op in a co-op .... For the last 20 years, I've done what many Montrealers have done (do) as far as my living situation goes and that is to jump from apartment to apartment. If I got tired of one place, I would find another once my lease had expired. There was always a great deal of choice and the way the city is designed, it's fabulous public transit system (there is no sarcasm intended here) and, what was once upon a time a renter's market, this way of life suited me beautifully. I always found great places all while having to apply very little effort. However, as life would have it, things change. Though the transit system remains in the good to excellent range, prices to rent have ski rocketed, forcing many to move away from the city's core making accessibility less convenient. ...

Canada's Annual Seal Hunt Sparks Fiery Debate

In the three decades since French animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot hugged seal pups on the Maritime ice floes, the controversy over Canada's annual seal hunt hasn't gone away. This year, former Beatle Sir Paul Mc Cartney and his wife Heather were the latest in a long line of celebrities to visit the east coast and speak out against the centuries-old hunt that kills about 300,000 of the young seals each year.

Hey Canada, Google Mars is our next frontier
Percival Lowell (1855-1916) is one of the best known observers of the planet Mars. Lowell is pictured here in the observer's chair of the 61-centimeter (24-inch) refracting telescope in the observatory he established in Flagstaff, Arizona. Lowell Observatory is still one of the foremost sites for telescopic studies of Mars and the other planets.

Now Nasa is providing Google with some cool images of Mars.

Canadian Flag Cursor

As a Canadian living abroad I love the Canadian flag being used instead of an arrow, during the navigation of your website. If possible I would love to be sent details of how I could download this to use on my own computer at home. Could this be emailed please? Many thanks if you can, but understand if you can't. Very useful and informative website.
Cheers
Marianne

Hi Marianne,
This flag pointer is a cursor graphic.
If you use a PC computer, you can change the pointer by modifying your mouse settings. Save this file and place it inside your C:\Windows\Cursors\ folder.
Then go to control panel, select Mouse ,and select pointers, click on browse, find this pointer 99.cur to replace the previous cursor (Normal Select) , then save as "Canada Flag" for example as the profile, and apply.

Those are the instructions for my mouse settings, it may be similar for you too.

Thanks for liking our website.
