A CANADIAN FROM ABROAD ~ Geraldine Mac Donald-Moran
- Inspires us with Far Away but More Canadian Than Ever
When you travel or live abroad for lengthy periods of time there occurs a strange phenomenon; perhaps, regardless of the cultural conditions in which you were raised.
It cold be coined or clichéd as 'birds of a feather flocking together' or simply described as circumstantial camaraderie but nonetheless it happens.
The encountering of two similar souls: the recognition of familiarity.
I finally met another Canadian!!!

Abolish both PST and GST
One political party is promising to reduce the G.S.T by 2 percent while others claim a tax cut would be better.
Why not abolish box the GST and PST.
How?
Simple. The Government knows how much money is generated by this tax be it Federal or Provincial. They also know how much income tax is accumulated in Canada. It is then possible to arrive at a percentage point such as the overall GST tax accumulated is X% of overall income tax.
Let's assume 3% By increasing the overall income tax rate by 3% (or whatever the correct percentage may be) one could eliminate both PST and GST.
Now a dollar spent is a dollar spent and not $1.14 (7% + 7%).
Nothing has changed, has it. The Government is still raking in the same amount of combined tax dollars.
At this point and because it is an election the tax rate could be reduced by a percentage point or more then one percentage point to give the average Canadian more spending money.
We just have to get rid of the additional taxes folks. There may be flaws in my proposal, please iron those out but lets get rid of both GST and PST

First Nations Concerns
If you want to improve this country why don't you start by addressing the First Nations Issues first above all. It was they who let you live here in the first place. Treat them all better, then maybe they will see that and respond with treatment to others better. A long time ago, the native people trusted the Europeans and were burned for their hospitality. Do you think it right to help better this situation or not. That is my opinion.

The Candian Image of Tourism!
I am from Halifax. If you want tourism to improve you have to change the attitude towards your neighbours. Canada fosters an attitude towards the States from early childhood. It comes across to other countries like a pissy teenager attitude as if we are constantly trying to compete in a match tooting a horn about every acomplishmen, actor and comedian... and the US isn't even in the game. Relax, Americans are not as we have been told, the just want to have a happy healthy life, just like everyone else in the world.

Spaghetti sauce a la Moma Macioca (Danny's Mom)
Courtesy Jamie Hall- Edmonton Journal- Nov. 25,05.
(Feeds four hungry lineman)
Cut 3 lbs (1500gm) of Baby back ribs into 3 in. (75mm) strips and sauté 5 min. in extra virgin Olive Oil. Drain oil and set them aside.
Get 3 large cans of diced Tomatoes
2-3 cloves of Garlic
½ of an Onion (top or bottom) diced
1 Tbsp each of Thyme, Basil, Parsley & Oregano
Salt & Pepper to taste
Cook Onion in Olive Oil for 1 minute, and then add the rest of ingredients bringing to a boil before adding the browned ribs. Reduce heat to low, cover and let sauce simmer for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until "the meat is coming off the bone."
Add more garlic halfway through if you feel like it.
In the meantime, prepare the pasta of your choice e.g. spaghetti, rigatoni or bucatini.
Remove the meat from the sauce and put into a bowl to be served separate from the pasta and sauce. Also have Parmesan cheese handy and crushed peppers for those who like their food "hot".
Apparel should include bibs and also include a bowl of warm water for sticky fingers.
Mama says; "Buon appetite con amore!"… " Enjoy with Love."
