Cassiar - do you remember?
Dear Canadian Culture,

You may recall the town of Cassiar, BC, the former asbestos mining town in northern British Columbia. The company town was closed down in 1992. The closure was due in part to the political will of the day and declining markets. The closure forced all mine employees and town residents to relocate, and while many remain in BC, they have spread all over Canada and even the world. Thousands of people worked and lived in Cassiar during its 40-year life.

Subsequent to the closure of Cassiar a website was developed. This site "Cassiar... do you remember?" now located at www.armourtech.com/~cassiar has evolved into a "virtual community".

Some former Cassiarites, myself included, were born there and no longer have the "roots", a home town they can return to. So the website provides such roots for many of us. As former Cassiarites no longer have the common ground of the town to stay in touch many now use the website to do that. They can view photos of Cassiar and of Cassiarites, use a message board to exchange notes, sign the guestbook, have their address listed in the Address Book, and more. The Address Book which already has hundreds of Cassiarites listed and is growing daily, allows folks to reconnect after all these years. Judging by the comments in the GuestBook as well as the many email messages I have received, the site has become an incredibly important part of the lives of many. Yet we know there are still very many such people who are not yet aware of the site or of the reunion organized for July 20-22, 2001 at the Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon, BC. Many folks have first learned of the reunion by visiting the website. Many people have already registered to attend.

Please take a few minutes of your time and visit the website so you can see firsthand what I am referring to. Full details of the reunion and much more is there.

Canadian Featured Book of the Week

The Other Side of Eden
The Other Side of Eden
by Hugh Brody

In the High Arctic in the 1970s, Hugh Brody lived with hunting peoples and experienced a way of living that would change his perception of the world. Insightful and fascinating, The Other Side of Eden blends memoir, adventure tale and intellectual journey, describing extraordinary snow and ice landscapes with companions at one with the land. Brody voyages through time and space to examine the integral distinction between hunters and farmers in human history. Drawing on his own experience, interviews with hunter-gatherers, the work of linguists, anthropologists, historians and the book of Genesis, he explores why farmers triumphed over hunter-gatherers.
