We SAVED MT LOGAN!

Mt Logan
Do you remember Sir William Logan?

Almost a year ago, in October 2000, when our Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau died, the Honourable Prime Minister Jean Chretien wanted to make a tribute by naming a mountain Mt. Trudeau. Unfortunately, his choice of mountain would have involved removing the tribute made to Sir William Logan, a Geologist who played a major role in the mapping of Canada. The possibility of renaming Mt. Logan to Mt. Trudeau sparked outrage in the hearts of many Canadians, particularly in our geological community. Harmen Keyser, a geologist, got together with Ray McNally, administrator of www.canadianculture.com, and published a petition on the Canadian Culture web site & Save Mt Logan site.

Within the first five days we already had more than 22,000 signed petitions, as well as front page coverage in the Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun, and Yukon Gold papers, radio interviews, and enough publicity to put pressure on our government to rethink their decision.

On October 16, 2000 Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps announced that Ottawa was reconsidering its decision to rename Mount Logan.

While this was not yet a firm commitment from Ottawa that the renaming of Canada's highest mountain was being abandoned for good, we were hopeful that Ottawa was aware of the tremendous opposition to the name change.

LATEST UPDATE July 5th,2001 - Letter from the Office of the Honourable Sheila Copps:

On behalf of the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, thank you for your correspondence of April 3, 2001, regarding proposals to rename Mount Logan and the Trans Canada Trail in honour of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Please excuse the delay of my reply.

Ms. Copps appreciates your advising her of your interest in these matters. The Government of Canada is currently examining a number of ways to commemorate the former Prime Minister; however, it has been confirmed that the renaming of Mount Logan is not one of them . Please be assured that further announcements will be made in due course.

With respect to your comments about possible instructions for the Centre for Topographic Information, I have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondence to the Honourable Ralph E. Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, for consideration.

Please accept our best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

Gilles Pineau
Senior Policy Advisor

North Dakota to go ahead with water diversion plan

FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA - North Dakota plans to go ahead with a controversial water diversion plan that could cause flooding in Manitoba.

The state wants to divert water from Devils Lake and dump it into the Sheyenne River, which flows into the Red River.

Water levels on Devils Lake are the highest they have been in 150 years.

The North Dakota Water Commission says it hopes to start construction of the project in the fall of 2002, before the completion of a U.S. federal environmental impact study.

Canada's Big House: The Dark History of the Kingston Penitentiary
Canada's Big House: The Dark History of the Kingston Penitentiary
by Author Peter H Hennessy

For more than 160 years, Kingston residents have lived under the shadow of "the Big House", Canada's most infamous prison. From the moment when its bricks were first laid, it began an ambiguous legacy of moral instruction and repression - one which was silently accepted by the government, townspeople and even some of the inmates. In Canada's Big House, historian Peter Hennessy blows the lid off the jail and reveals the history of one of our most violent and sinister institutions.
