Where have all the Teachers gone?

I have, in recent months, met many former teachers and am APPALLED at the main reason given for changing their profession. It isn't the remuneration they received. They quit because the educational system has been taken over by parents who know nothing about how an effective education can be delivered at the classroom level. These parents do not support the teachers when THEIR children cause discipline problems, are the class clowns or bullies, or fail to do their homework.

School Boards and Principals live in fear of parental complaints, even if the teacher is a top level educator who has taken reasonable action to provide class control and an atmosphere of learning for the other students.

The Vancouver Province newspaper did an article recently on School Vandalism in Richmond BC. To me it shows that those responsible for protection of school property and student behavior are afraid of the students. Adults in positions of authority no longer have the right to discipline or hold parents responsible for their children's behaviors. This modern dogma of "Spare the Rod and the child will be happy (spoiled rotten, but happy.") makes no sense. That a child's self esteem will necessarily suffer if he or she is disciplined, is another hay-wire theory.

I was assigned many hundreds of young people for recruit training in the Canadian Forces. They came to me as sniveling little lost children and, when they marched out six weeks later, they had been transformed into responsible adults. When we applied discipline, eyes, ears and minds were on the job. When disciplined correctly they loved it and took pride in their ability to persevere in the military or civilian work force. What was our secret? DISCIPLINE, but supported Discipline. Their parents never complained about how I treated their 'military' children. I was constantly observed by my commanders to ensure that discipline was consistent, effective, and fair. Would that not be all we asked of a teacher? Would you as a parent not support an education structure that was or is based on the building blocks for a successful adult life i.e. discipline, accountability, and responsibility for ones own actions?

Your children's educational life and future are in jeopardy! A recent article in the Vancouver Province by Frank Luba fluba@png.canwest.com indicates the control problems being faced in many school juristictions. I have added comments on this article from various groups of people who have read it. These comments show concerns about who seems to be running the school system. The question is who is and is not supporting the rights of the teacher and the public to have our schools and students protected from disruptive children on their way to nowhere and their irresponsible parents? Save our teachers through your support and confidence in their ability. Your children should not be put in a cage from lack of education.

IF YOU CAN READ THIS ~ THANK A TEACHER!

IF YOU SUPPORT THE TEACHERS YOUR CHILDREN WILL THANK YOU!

COMMENTS GIVEN TO ME DURING MY RESEARCH:

  • Vancouver Island teacher: I have over one hundred students and a mother phoned to ask me to review a program that may help her daughter in math, I explained I had no time and the mother did not understand how much time a non authorized PROGRAM takes to review. I am not allowed to recommend non CURRICULUM programs.
  • Former Female Quebec Teacher - Very well done Jack.
  • Calgary PROFESSIONAL engineer with a very large number of children and grandchildren of school age: When the kids are on school property why can't they be watched all the time? Where is there a violation of civil liberties? These kids are children, not adults, and the reason they are in school is to learn by being constantly interacting with teachers. Otherwise they might as well stay at home. Where, by the way, the parents are most likely not at. Let's get after this and expose the Civil Liberties group for what they are and also the school trustees association who are both NDP sponsored.
  • BC PROFESSIONAL parent with one child in Jnr. high and one in primary SCHOOL: IN BC, they are planning to introduce a 4 day SCHOOL Week, with longer hours for the children which I think is stupid because it will cause problems for Daycare situations after school and on Fridays. It will only save the School district money but will cause parents to shovel more money out for this care and alter their work habits possibly jeopardizing their careers. The other problem with a four day school week is that in winter kids will be going to school in the dark and coming home in the dark based on their time schedules required to meet the same amount of hours within a school year period.
  • Police Officer: We tie up highly trained and paid police officers PATROLLING the halls of our schools. this cost to the taxpayers is HORRENDOUS and is redundant in a disciplined environment. these officers are needed on the street.
  • Responsible parent of three CHILDREN in high school: If I support the teacher against the thugs, my child will be beat up and my property or car may be VANDALIZED. WE must take back control of our community.
  • High school student: i can do pretty much as i want, the law's on my side. the teacher knows it and so do the students.
  • Elderly female person: no elder in their right mind takes public transport when the transit subsidized students are let out of school. filthy language, sexual OVERTURES, they are crude, rude and need a darn good thrashing!
