To Thanksgivings Gone

It's at Thanksgiving that I miss Canada the most. The trees here in Surrey don't change colour much. All year round I am faced with a mass of green or nothing at all. I long for the sound of crunching under foot, of bright orange and red leaves throwing themselves to the ground around me. The feel of that cold air that is forcasting the winter to come. Seasons here have there own pleasures sure, but not like Ontario. How I long to see it again.

And I miss my family. I miss those Thanksgiving with my grandparents, my uncle, aunt and cousins. I miss that sense of a common thread that bound us all together. A shared sense of being. I miss feeling Canadian.

I made my partner and I a Turkey dinner today with all the trimmings and pumpkin pie for dessert. It was wonderful but no matter how hard I try to recreate that feeling that I once knew, I find that it is somehow gone. And I miss it. Desperately.

So! I will have to make my Thanksgiving anew.

I am thankful for my life, for my loved ones, my health, wealth and happiness. I may not be able to recapture that perfect Canadian Thanksgiving that my memory holds so dear but I can try to find a new one.

So in memory of all those Thanksgivings gone, here is to the year to come and to all those that I love.
